A Day in the Life of a Sports Medicine Consultant During Lockdown

What exercise (if any) are you doing?

Dr Michael Burdon: I have always enjoyed running and have completed marathons and half marathons over the years. I run less now but will usually go out to run 2-3 times per week. I have continued this during the lockdown- maintaining safe distancing and leaving from my home. I will run for 30-40 minutes usually. On non-running days I will go out and walk for up to an hour with no stopping for sunbathing! I still aim to reach 10,000 steps per day if possible as we know this is very good for health.

I also use a gym mat at home to do some bodyweight exercises and core strength work. I have been lucky enough to join group exercise with my colleagues at times- led by our S and C coach Mr Andy Page.

Any diet / nutrition advice?

Dr Michael Burdon: I think that at the start of the lockdown many of us starting to drink a bit more alcohol than normal and I think that was. Natural thing with changes in circumstances. I know follow my usual practice of not drinking any alcohol if I have work the next day I.e. weekends only. I am still working from home and it is important to keep continuity in your habits in this way I believe.

Not snacking at home has been a challenge and therefore I am no longer buying any unhealthy foods. I have some more time for cooking now and enjoy preparing healthy meals including batch cooking.

Are you taking supplements?

Dr Michael Burdon: I normally take a multivitamin pill and turmeric supplements. Turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory and it helps reduce some aching after exercise. I also take a probiotic drink each morning.

Safe ways you’re getting Vitamin D / going outdoors?

Dr Michael Burdon: Sitting in the sun in my small garden and exercising outdoors as above are good ways to boost vitamin D levels. Be careful in hot weather to use adequate sunscreen to avoid sunburn of course.

Any advice for working from home / exercise at home?

Dr Michael Burdon: It is important to have regular breaks from sitting if working from home. This can help to reduce posture issues/muscle pain/etc..

I would advise trying to have a routine and use the once daily exercise allowance to good effect. The lockdown is stressful and it is important to look after mental health as much as physical health. Relaxing with music/reading/ meditation as examples are all important.

Try and sleep well (note alcohol leads to poor quality sleep)- aiming for minimum 7-8h per night).
