Alex found himself with knee pain following a friendly game of touch rugby and didn’t want to take any chances – especially as he had experienced a knee injury in the past on his other knee which resulted in surgical intervention. Keen to avoid a similar path, Alex turned to Physiotherapist, Amy Todd, in our Raynes Park clinic.

Once she suspected an ACL injury, she immediately brought in the expertise of Sport & Exercise Medicine Consultant, Dr Farhan Shahid, to undertake a full assessment of Alex’s injury in order to find the correct diagnosis and ultimately dictate the best course of action.

The outcome, a torn ACL.

Luckily Alex had acted quickly enough following the injury that he was eligible to take part in a cross bracing protocol, which is a relatively new form of treatment here in the UK. His team worked quickly in order to make this a reality for Alex and within just a few days he had begun his treatment.

Over the course of the next 12 weeks Alex worked hard with his team, having regular rehab sessions and check ins to make sure the treatment was effective. Every week he gained more strength and range of movement in his knee, and met every stage with determination and focus.

We’re pleased to say that the outcome was a complete success and Alex is back walking, playing the sports he loves, and was even able to get down on one knee to propose to his fiancé!

We’re so glad to have been able to support Alex back to full function and strength, allowing him to avoid surgery for a second time.
