Dr Raj Amarnani is a Consultant in Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine with specialist expertise in rheumatology and bone health. He has worked extensively across a wide range of sports and performing arts, caring for elite athletes and patients of all activity levels, providing advanced diagnostic ultrasound, guided injections, and shockwave therapy for sports injuries, arthritis, and overuse conditions.

Dr Amarnani has provided medical care for England and Wales Cricket Board, West Ham United Football Club, the Lawn Tennis Association, the Royal Ballet School, Super League Basketball, the Commonwealth Games and the London Marathon.

Dr Raj Amarnani is a Consultant in Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine. His career to date spans elite sport, NHS practice, academic leadership, and international research. He has provided medical care for teams and organisations including the England and Wales Cricket Board, West Ham United Football Club, the Lawn Tennis Association, the Royal Ballet School, Super League Basketball, the Commonwealth Games and the London Marathon. He is President of the Royal Society of Medicine’s Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Section, and his contributions have been recognised with national and international awards. 

Raj works as an NHS Consultant at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospital. He is a medical advisor and trustee for the National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society, and sits on two European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) taskforces developing international guidelines on physical activity and fatigue in rheumatic diseases. 

After graduating with honours and at the top of his year at the University of Sheffield, Raj completed an MSc in Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford with distinction, alongside postgraduate qualifications in musculoskeletal medicine and ultrasound. He is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (Rheumatology) and a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine. 

With over 60 peer-reviewed publications, including work in The Lancet Rheumatology and the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Raj is regularly invited to speak at leading national and international conferences. He works with professional athletes as well as patients of all activity levels, helping them stay active, recover fully, and prevent future problems.

Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospitals. Team Doctor for the England and Wales Cricket Board; Academy/Tunnel Doctor at West Ham United Football Club. 

Work Experience

Event doctor for the London Marathon, Commonwealth Games, Royal Ballet School, and London Lions Basketball Club. Previous posts at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Barts Health NHS Trust and Homerton University Hospital. 

Other Experience

Lead author for the Moving Medicine Inflammatory Rheumatic Diseases Module. Contributor to international EULAR taskforces on physical activity and fatigue management in rheumatic diseases. Member of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM) Communications Committee. Former Honorary Secretary of the Royal Society of Medicine Sport and Exercise Medicine Council. Previous Registrar Representative on both the FSEM and Royal College of Physicians SEM Councils.
