Biography

Dr Mike Burdon is a highly experienced Consultant in Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal (MSK) medicine with an extensive previous general practice background.

He has worked in various professional sports including rugby, football, diving, swimming and hockey. He has worked at Pure Sports Medicine since 2015 and was previously head of Sports Medicine for the company. Mike also works for the Faculty of Sports Medicine as an appraiser of other doctors within the speciality.

Mike is passionate in providing musculoskeletal care to patients of all backgrounds — sporty or not! He is qualified and able to provide the following care when needed: diagnostic ultrasound scanning, guided injections and shockwave therapy. 

Mike enjoys physical exercise himself and attends the gym on a regular basis. He is a very keen runner and has completed several marathons plus two 50km ultramarathons to date. Outside of sports and the gym, Mike is also a keen Salsa dancer, enjoying dance as another form of exercise.

GP for 16 years, initially qualified as a GP and worked at inner city practice as a partner 2000 – 2005, achieved Diploma in SEM in 2004 then MSc in 2008, worked for the Ministry of Defence for 7 years as specialist in Regional Rehabilitation Unit- managing injuries in Royal Marines, Army, Navy and Airforce, recognised on specialist register in SEM as a Consultant Dec 2013, operated private SEM clinic in Plymouth 2014 – 2016, Event Doctor for London 2012 Olympics (covering aquatic sports), Examiner and Tutor for Bath MSc course 2014-present, course Tutor on Bournemouth US course from 2015- present, was previously the Doctor for Plymouth College swimming program and Plymouth Leander, have taken part and completed 3 marathons and ultramarathons, was previously a board member for BASEM and Responsible Officer linked to GMC from 2016 – 2018
