Introduction
Dr John Etherington CBE is a consultant in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Medicine, with a master’s degree in Sports Medicine. Following a decorated career in the military where he was National Clinical Director for Rehabilitation at Headley Court, John is also our Medical Director at Pure Sports Medicine, overseeing all medical policy at the company.

Dr Etherington had a 35-year career in the British Army becoming the Director of Defence Rehabilitation which made me responsible for the policy and plans for all forms of rehabilitation and musculoskeletal medicine across the Armed Forces from 2011-2018, overseeing around 1000 health professionals.
He was previously Clinical Director at Headley Court, the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, and was responsible for the development of the complex trauma rehabilitation services during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan – managing all the casualties returning from these conflicts.
From April 2013, for three years, he held the additional post of National Clinical Director for Rehabilitation at NHS England. He was a member of the NHS England Clinical Reference Groups for Rehabilitation and also Emergency Preparedness, Response and Resilience.
He co-chaired the rehabilitation sub-committee of the Regional Trauma Network clinical advisory group, which developed the highly successful system of trauma networks in England.
He was awarded an OBE in 2009 and a CBE in 2018 for services to military medicine. He was President of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK from December 2018-21.
He has more than 40 publications and have presented frequently at scientific and policy meetings nationally and internationally.
John has considerable experience in Rheumatology, particularly in the sporting and active younger population – with a particular interest in the spondyloarthropathies. He has also led rehabilitation teams in the management of complex trauma, neurological and brain injury and complex medical problems such as recovery from illness and fatigue.
